Autumn/Winter
See the vivid red berries of the
guelder rose bush and watch the winter sunlight glowing in the reeds. Warm
up in our heated classroom and enjoy the benefit of a wide range of
activities.
Science and Geography EY, KS1 - KS4
 | Take a closer look at the lifecycle of
a dragonflies (includes pond dipping). |
 | Learn about the changing seasons and
the impact people are having on the planet's weather (includes
renewable energy sources). |
 | Study some of the plants found at
Wicken Fen-why do the trees change colour in the autumn? What are the
parts of a plant called? Which plants grow in the local Fenland
environment? |
 | Learn about grid references, mapping
and compass reading.
Winter nature walks - listen to the birds, learn how British animals
cope
during the cold winter months, look for tracks left in the mud and
then create your own plaster cast of a footprint. |
History KS1 - KS2
Spend a day in the life of a Victorian Fen worker. Try your hand at
thatching, peat digging, make bread using Wicken milled flour, explore Fen
Cottage, a traditional restored fen workers cottage and learn about
drainage of the fens.
Recreate an original photo of the residents of Lode Lane, Wicken (pictured
right) with your class.
Art EY, KS1 - KS2
Use clay, recycled and natural fen materials to create your own works of
art to remind you of your visit to Wicken Fen.
Father Christmas at the Fen
 | Would you like to give your class a
special treat this Christmas? Then why not combine an educational
visit to Wicken Fen with a trip to see Santa in his Fen Cottage
Grotto. |
 | Go for a winter nature walk, make some
Christmas craft then visit Santa. |
A visit to your school by a Learning
Officer can be arranged to run an owl pellet dissection activity to link
with KS 2 science - life processes and will cover food chains and
skeletons.
