Learn the Traditional Craft of Eel Catching at Wicken Fen
Eels can be said to run in Peter's blood as family records can trace 20 generations of his ancestors dating back nearly 500 years involved in eel catching. The Carter family have also been involved in other traditional fenland trades and crafts such as peat and reed cutting, willow weaving and wildfowling. Peter from Outwell uses traditional hand made willow traps to catch eels along the waterways of Cambridgeshire. Eel catchers were once a common sight along the waterways but in recent years the traditional occupation has dwindled along with the decline in eel stocks. Participants will get the opportunity to make and set their own eel traps and try some of the delicious eels caught by Peter. He will also be giving a demonstration of harmless wildfowling using a punt gun made in the early 19th century. The large barred gun, which is to heavy for a man to hold was fired from a punt and was so lethal that it was capable of killing over 50 ducks with a single shot. Tickets for the Fenman's Day (£40 including lunch) are available from the Wicken Fen Visitor Centre on 01353 720274. |
