Visitors Help Construct Living Play Area at Wicken Fen

Visitors and National Trust volunteers have pitched in and helped construct a living willow play area for children at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, near Ely.

The willow tunnel situated between the Visitor Centre and the Café and incorporates a maze of enclosed tunnels with portholes and open play area, which will also be used for story telling. The structure was designed by local weaver, Nadine Anderson, who runs regular weaving courses at the fen. The structure took two weekends to build and will 'green up' when the willow comes into leaf later in the spring.

Visitor Services Manager, Isabel Sedgwick said:

"The tunnel is designed to be a natural and visually appealing structure which provides a safe area for children to play and let their imaginations run wild. It was fantastic to see so many local families helping to build the tunnel which will be used and enjoyed by children for years to come".
