News from the Fen

Welcome to the July edition of News from the Fen, the community newsletter for the National Trust's Wicken Fen Vision.

The Newsletter, packed with interesting articles and news on the Wicken Fen Vision is delivered quarterly to approximately 20,000 households in and around the villages surrounding the Vision lands to keep the public informed on the development of the Wicken Fen Vision and activities at Wicken Fen.

Highlights in this issue include:-

bulletNational Dragonfly Centre opens at Wicken Fen (Page 1) A national Dragonfly Centre is set to open its doors to the public on Sunday 26 July. The centre is a joint project between the National Trust, British Dragonfly Society and the Dragonfly Project and has been supported by the Fens Adventurers Rural Development Programme.
bulletSpringwatch Presenter takes on Patron Role for Vision (Page 2) Naturalist Chris Packham presenter of the highly popular BBC wildlife programme Springwatch becomes Patron for the Wicken Fen Vision.
bulletCan you tell your Yellow Rattle from your Yellow Loosestrife? (Page 2) To aid visitors' understanding of Wicken Fen's beautiful fen flora, Warden James Selby spent the winter months preparing information panels on flowering plants found on the ancient Sedge Fen.
bulletEnjoy the Fen alongside the Koniks and Highlands (Page 3) Herds of free-ranging Konik ponies and Highland Cattle are helping the Trust create a diverse range of habitats on the vision lands. Two leaflets in this newsletter, Animals at Large and Ambling with Animals provide a unique in-sight into why these breeds were chosen to help manage the fen and tips and advice to help you enjoy walking in areas where the animals live.
bulletVision for Wicken is the Way Ahead (Page 4 & 5) Tony Juniper, one of the world's leading environmental campaigners argues the best place to begin the nature versus food debate is in the kitchen, where as a nation we waste around 30 per cent of our food.
bulletGo Wild at Wicken this Summer (Page 7) The long school holidays are with us and Wicken Fen has a host of fun activities ranging from Wildlife Detectives, Bugs and Beastie Hunts to Wild Art to help keep young ones amused during the summer break.
