Community Tree Planting at White Fen, Nr Lode, Cambridgeshire

The National Trust is inviting everyone to grab their wellies and gloves to join them for a series of Community Tree Planting Days on White Fen, Near Lode.

The tree planting is part of a programme to create woodland habitat of native broadleaved species such as hawthorn and field maple. Many of the trees were raised by the gardeners at the Trust's nearby Anglesey Abbey.

The Community Tree Planting days are being held on Sunday 31 January, 28 February and 28 March between 1000-1400. Everyone is welcome to come along for an hour or two or the whole day, no experience is necessary and the Trust will provide tools and instruction.

Wicken Fen Community Warden, Emma Shepherd said:

"Tree planting is an activity that the whole family can enjoy together. The small saplings will eventually create a fantastic woodland habitat that humans and wildlife can share and enjoy for countless for generations to come".

The 2.5 hectare White Fen, near Anglesey Abbey was purchased by the National Trust in 2007 as part of the Wicken Fen Vision, a 100 year plan to create a 53sq km nature reserve and 'green lung' for Cambridgeshire and the East of England between Wicken and Cambridge. A cycleway across White Fen together with a new bridge over Swaffham Bulbeck Lode was opened in July 2008 as part of the development of a Spine Route linking Wicken Fen to Bottisham with onward connections to Cambridge.

White Fen can easily be reached on foot or bike from Lode via Fen Road and White Fen Droveway. Limited parking will be available on site.
