Press Release

Wicken Fen Vision
Your Chance to Shape the Future

The National Trust have announced the dates for a series of Drop-in sessions to be held at Wicken Fen, the next steps in a continuing programme of consultation to shape the future of the Wicken Fen Vision.

The Drop-in sessions are an ideal opportunity for the wide range of users who regularly visit Wicken Fen and the wider Vision lands to meet the Wicken Fen team to discuss opportunities, concerns and their hopes and wishes for the future.

Drop-in sessions will be held at the Wicken Fen Visitor Centre between 1000 - 1700 on the following dates:

bullet27 September: Horse riders
bullet4 October: Cyclists
bullet11 October: all other users including walkers, bird watchers, naturalists, dog walkers, boaters and anglers.

Speaking on the Drop-in sessions, Chris Soans, Wicken Property Manager said ….."Since we launched the Wicken Fen Vision Consultation in March we've been working hard to build stronger relationships with individuals and various user groups that regularly use Wicken Fen. I hope as many people as possible will attend the Drop-in sessions, their input will assist the Trust to develop the Vision to meet the needs and aspirations of the broad spectrum of users who regularly visit Wicken Fen and the wider Vision lands"

The Drop-in sessions are a follow on from the Wicken Fen Vision - Your Chance to Shape the Future public consultation held earlier this year which revealed widespread public support for the Wicken Fen Vision with eight out of ten respondents supporting the National Trusts ambitious plans to create a new landscape scale nature reserve covering around 56 sq km between Cambridge and Wicken Fen.

Users who are unable to attend Wicken Fen on the date scheduled for their particular interest are most welcome to attend one of the other sessions.

Notes to Editors

  1. Launched in 1999, the Wicken Fen Vision is a 100 year Vision to provide a "green lung" for Cambridgeshire and the East of England. The creation of a mosaic of Fenland habitats will help protect and attract many threatened and endangered species of wildlife whilst also benefiting local residents and visitors by increasing access to the countryside for leisure, recreation and education. The reserve will also assist environmental protection through carbon management and flood risk alleviation.
  2. The Wicken Fen Vision is being developed by the National Trust in association with a number of strategic partners including, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridge City Council, Department for Communities and Local Government, East of England Development Agency, Cambridgeshire Horizons, Greater Cambridge Partnership, Environment Agency, Natural England, Sustrans, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, The Tubney Charitable Trust and Heritage Lottery Fund.
