Press Release Walk Back in Time with the National Trust The National Trust is inviting everyone to grab their wellies and join them for a historic walk of discovery on Hurdle Hall, near Reach on Sunday 13 December. The Trust have teamed up with the Cambridge Archaeology Field Group to conduct a 'field walk' on Hurdle Hall where ancient treasures such as pottery, flints, bones or metal objects could be found. Field walking involves dividing the field into a grid pattern and searching each grid for artefacts. There is a strong chance that recent ploughing will have brought to the surface treasures which may have lain underground for thousands of years. A recent field walking exercise conducted at the Trust's Oily Hall site, near Lode, recovered 430 struck flints (117 of which are believed to be blades) together with seven shards of pottery. The quantity and quality of the finds has raised considerable interest amongst archaeologists with a general consensus that the struck flints are late Mesolithic (8500 4000BC) or early Neolithic (4000-2200BC) with the pottery dating from the Neolithic period. Wicken Fen Vision, Community Warden, Emma Shepherd said: "The field walk will provide a fantastic opportunity for individuals and families to have a great day out in the countryside and to hopefully find clues to the history of human settlement at Hurdle Hall. Who knows what treasures we may find". People wishing to take part in the field walk should meet on Reach Village Green at 10am on Sunday 13 December. Children under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Walking boots or wellies are recommended.
