What will the area be like in the future?

This is an exciting opportunity to create a mosaic of different habitats for wildlife and different sorts of open space for people to enjoy. There will be wetland habitat, especially in the lower-lying areas around the existing Wicken Fen. This will include areas of open water and marshy areas with tall vegetation such as reeds and bulrush - the Wicken Fen Vision area will not end up as one large lake.

Elsewhere there will be grassland that is wetter in the winter and drier in the summer and there will be large areas of new scrubland and woodland. Much of the area will be managed by grazing, in some places by the small groups of Konik ponies and Highland cattle that we have already introduced.

New routes
One of our top priorities is to create new areas that are open for the public to enjoy, and to create new routes that link in with existing footpaths and other rights of way. For example a new bridge has recently been constructed over Swaffham Bulbeck Lode, eventually people will be able to walk, cycle, or ride from Waterbeach and Anglesey Abbey in the South to Wicken Fen. The entire route should be open in 2010. A series of circular routes are planned through different habitats with the chance to see a variety of wildlife.
The Lodes
There are other important historical routes across the Vision area that the National Trust would like to see conserved and enhanced. These are the Lodes, man-made waterways that link villages on the eastern side of the Vision area with the River Cam in the west. The Lodes are the responsibility of the Environment Agency, and we will work closely with them to find the best way to secure their long-term future. Lowering or abandoning the Lodes is not part of our Vision: conserving local history is one of the National Trust's most important objectives which is why we want to see the Lodes secured for the future.

Ideas include new bridges and footpaths, cycle routes and picnic sites, horse trails, guided boat trips, cycle hire and more events and activities for everyone.
