Wicken Fen was the first nature reserve to be owned by the National Trust. With the rich legacy of its sedge fen, its reed beds and lodes, it remains one of the most important wetlands in Europe. It is an iconic ecological asset, supporting thousands of plants, insects, birds and mammals, and its species list now tops 8000, more than any other reserve in the country. However this wonderful nature reserve, is very vulnerable, being a tiny fragment of the once great un-drained fen basin which once covered much of lowland East Anglia and many of its rare species are under threat.

That is why the National Trust believes the only way to safeguard its future is to expand the reserve and create new habitats. That’s the ambition of the Wicken Fen Vision, to make a landscape scale nature reserve, from the present site at Wicken all the way to Cambridge. Our vision will not only create a habitat for wildlife to thrive but also will provide space for people, as public access is at the heart of the Vision. The Cambridge sub region is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, with provision for 47,500 new homes by 2016, and therefore the Vision will create a much needed green lung for Cambridgeshire and East Anglia.

We’re so excited about this and we’d really welcome your involvement. If you would like to find out more,
look on the Wicken website or email wicken@nationaltrust.org.uk

Looking forward to hearing from you.
